Having a fireplace installed in your home can really improve the look and the ambiance of a room. The heat provided by a fireplace just feels more comfortable—allowing you to relax and unwind. Another major benefit of a hearth is that it can increase the value of your home.

When it comes to selecting a fireplace, fireplace insert or freestanding stove, work with an expert who can help guide you through the many choices. They'll take measurements, ask probing questions and most importantly, listen. It's about you. Your wants, needs and expectations.

A good place to start is by determining exactly what it is you’re looking for.

Differences Between Freestanding Stoves, Fireplace Inserts and Fireplaces

When people think of a fireplace, they often think of a stunning brick or stone facade with an open wood fire, which connects to a flue and chimney. While this was the case in the past, many modern fireplaces are factory built and can be located virtually anywhere in the home. These units are typically made of metal, glass, air-cooled pipes, and insulated walls. Some also have blowers that push heated air from the fire into your home. While still regulated by engineering and municipal codes, the difference in their construction allows for more design options.

Freestanding Stoves

A freestanding stove is designed to produce heat and can burn a variety of fuels. Generally, the unit consists of a solid metal closed fire chamber, a base, and an adjustable air control. Stoves are sized according to the space a homeowner is looking to heat. Modern wood stoves burn cleaner, meeting current EPA emissions standards. Gas stoves can be placed nearly anywhere in the home with a variety of venting options. Plus they come in a variety of sizes and finishes including cast iron and enamel to suit your heating needs and style.

Fireplace Inserts

Fireplace inserts are designed to fit within the firebox of an existing wood fireplace. Inserts convert masonry fireplaces into more efficient heating systems and can be wood or gas. Wood inserts are more efficient than open masonry fireplaces, meaning you’ll get more heat and burn less wood. Gas inserts can include a remote, fan and accent lights as options, but are standard on most models. Rest easy knowing your gas insert can be a source of heat even during a power outage!

Fireplaces

A factory-built fireplace can be installed nearly anywhere in the home. Because each model and manufacturer will vary, your installer will ensure that all clearances are met, ensuring your family will be warm and safe. If you're looking for the ambiance of a fireplace, but don't need the heat, some gas models allow for excess heat to be ducted into nearby rooms. Wood fireplaces add the beauty and romance of a traditional masonry fireplace, but without the heat loss and polluted air of open burning units.

 Finishing Touches

Put the final touches on your new fireplace with a mantel. A hearth can be level with the floor or raised to offer extra seating during family events. Add the right stone or tile to tie everything together for the look you’ve been dreaming
